Mothers' Day

Mothers' Day- a day we take the time to show her our appreciation by bring her out for lunch or dinner. We may even buy her a gift or flowers. But what about the rest of the year? How do we show our mothers that we love her and are really grateful to have her? What if i told you Mothers' Day was only invented in 1914? Well it was. Mothers' Day was founded by Anna Reeves Jarvis to honor her late mother and other mothers as group and was established in 1914. So, before this founding of Mothers' Day, how to you think people showed their appreciation? Well, having heard stories from my late mother and other elder in our community, mothers were shown love and respect on a daily basis. Children then, would listen to their mothers and talking back was unheard of. They did their chores without any fuss and helped around the house even when they were not asked to do. By doing this, they were helping their mothers to lighten her workload and they did of out of love. So back to my question? How do we show our mothers that we love her and are really grateful to have her?

Well, let's not wait for Mothers' Day. Let's show it to her everyday, help her with the house chores, surprise her by cooking her favourite dish, buy a stalk of flower or a bouquet of flowers every now and then. She may tell you not to waste money on flowers so I suggest the stalk of rose or whatever is her favourite flower. For those of us who have lost our mothers, she will always remain in our hearts. We can honor her by teaching our own children all she has taught us. For us catholics, we must not forget that we have a heavenly mother as well-Mother Mary. How can we show her our appreciation for saying yes to God and for giving birth to Jesus and taking care of Him when He was young? Simple, just as we would listen to our mothers when they told us to do something, we too should listen to Mother Mary and meditate on the Rosary daily. Just as I ask Mother Mary to speak to Jesus for me I also ask her to say hello to my mama who is in Heaven.
