Pentecost Sunday, Cycle B

Pentecost Sunday is the day when Jesus gifted His disciples the Holy Spirit.

This can be found in Acts 2:1-11.

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

Therefore, this is the day we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples who were in the Upper room when they were in Jerusalem. In this way, Jesus fulfilled His promise when He sent a helper to His disciples. More like a protector. With the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples were able to preach to many people who could now understand what they were speaking. With the Holy Spirit guiding them the disciples were able to perform what Jesus had instructed them to do which is the work that he begun. "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." John 20:21

This Gospel teaches us that the church is the is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. In the Sacrament of of Baptism, we are cleansed of our sins and become a new creation in Christ and in the Sacrament of Penance, God shows us His mercy through the forgiveness our our sins. These two Sacraments teaches us the importance of forgiveness. As God forgives us of our sins so too should we to forgive others who have sinned against us. So as we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. Let us ask ourselves if there is someone we need to forgive. Let us make Jesus happy by listening to His word and do as He tells us to. Let us spread peace and love where ever we go.

Let us make an effort to pray the prayer of the Holy Spirit daily. Let's start today.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.

And You shall renew the face of the earth.
